Salah satu tonggak penting adalah berdirinya Taman Siswa oleh Ki Hajar Dewantara dan Sekolah Adabiah oleh Abdullah Ahmad di Padang. Sekolah-sekolah ini menjadi pusat pendidikan yang melahirkan banyak pemuda cerdas dan berwawasan kebangsaan, yang kemudian menjadi motor penggerak dalam perjuangan kemerdekaan.
2. Sumpah Pemuda dan Peran Pemuda Minang
Pada Kongres Pemuda II tahun 1928 yang menghasilkan Sumpah Pemuda, Mohammad Yamin, seorang pemuda Minang, menjadi salah satu tokoh kunci. Yamin, yang dikenal sebagai seorang sastrawan dan politikus, menyumbangkan konsep “Indonesia” sebagai satu kesatuan bangsa, tanah air, dan bahasa. Sumbangsihnya sangat krusial dalam membangun kesadaran nasional di kalangan pemuda Indonesia.
3. Gerakan Perlawanan dan Politik
Tokoh-tokoh Minangkabau seperti Haji Agus Salim, Mohammad Hatta, dan Tan Malaka memainkan peran strategis dalam pergerakan nasional. Haji Agus Salim, seorang diplomat ulung, terlibat aktif dalam diplomasi internasional untuk memperjuangkan kemerdekaan Indonesia. Mohammad Hatta, yang kelak menjadi Wakil Presiden pertama RI, adalah pemikir ekonomi dan politik yang turut merumuskan strategi perjuangan kemerdekaan. Tan Malaka, dengan pemikiran revolusionernya, menjadi simbol perlawanan terhadap penjajahan.
4. Peran Pers dan Media
Tokoh Minangkabau juga unggul dalam bidang pers dan media, yang menjadi alat penting dalam penyebaran ide-ide kebangsaan. Surat kabar seperti Soeloeh Indonesia Moeda yang didirikan oleh Abdul Muis dan Pewarta Deli oleh Djamaluddin Adinegoro, menjadi corong untuk menyuarakan perjuangan rakyat Indonesia. Lewat tulisan-tulisan tajam mereka, pers Minangkabau turut menggerakkan semangat nasionalisme di seluruh Nusantara.
5. Kontribusi dalam Pemerintahan Awal Republi
Setelah Proklamasi Kemerdekaan, tokoh-tokoh Minangkabau juga aktif dalam pemerintahan Republik Indonesia yang baru berdiri. Mohammad Hatta menjadi wakil presiden pertama, mendampingi Soekarno. Mereka bersama-sama merumuskan dasar negara, Undang-Undang Dasar 1945, dan langkah-langkah awal untuk mempertahankan kemerdekaan dari ancaman kolonial Belanda yang ingin kembali menguasai Indonesia.
Minangkabau, dengan tradisi adat dan pendidikan yang kuat, telah melahirkan banyak tokoh yang berperan penting dalam sejarah perjuangan bangsa Indonesia. Semangat perjuangan dan pemikiran progresif yang diwariskan oleh para tokoh Minang menjadi fondasi yang kokoh bagi lahirnya bangsa Indonesia yang merdeka dan berdaulat. Warisan ini terus hidup dan menjadi inspirasi bagi generasi berikutnya untuk mempertahankan kedaulatan dan keadilan di tanah air.
